    • In the message, please state the following:

  • When your child is sick, the parent/guardian can provide a signed note with the student information and valid reason for absence.
  • If a student has a health related issue the parent/guardian should provide a written note from a physician explaining the valid reason for absence(s).
  • If a student is absent 3 consecutive days, a valid physician note explaining the valid reason for absences is mandatory.

Students will be listed as truant if we do not receive a call or note from a parent/guardian. Every absence should be excused no longer than 72 hours after the absence. Any absence not excused within the 72 hour window, will automatically be considered unexcused

The following are valid reasons for excused absences: (Education Code (EC) Section 48205)

  • Personal illness
  • Quarantine under the direction of a doctor/health officer
  • Medical, dental, optometric, or chiropractic appointments for the child

  • Student has a highly contagious illness (communicable disease)
  • Participation in religious instruction or exercises (student must attend at least the minimum school day and be excused no more than four (4) days per month)
  • For the purpose of spending time with a member of the student’s immediate family who is an active member of the uniformed services and has been called to duty for, is on leave from, or has immediately returned from, deployment to a combat zone or combat support position.
  • For justifiable reasons that include, but are not limited to:
    • Appearance in court*
    • Attendance at a funeral service for an individual other than a member of the student’s immediate family*
    • Observance of a religious holiday or ceremony*
    • Attendance at a religious retreat*

*These and other justifiable reasons must have a prior written request by the parent/guardian and/or the approval of the principal or designee.

Note: After ten (10) absences for personal illness, any further absences must be verified with an updated physician’s note or the student must be brought to school on each day of the illness to have a designated staff verify the illness

All persons between 6 and 18 years of age are required by California law to attend school. In addition, parents have the legal responsibility to ensure their child’s attendance. (E.C. Section 48200 “Compulsory Education”)

Truant students will be reported to the Student Attendance Review Team (SART) and will become a part of the SART/Student Attendance Review Board (SARB) Process.

  • Step 1: Attendance letter #1 will be sent after the 3rd unexcused absence
  • Step 2: Attendance letter #2 will be sent after the 7th unexcused absence. A meeting and/or home visit with the school counselor will occur to discuss interventions. Parents will be notified of the time and place for the meeting. Completion of a mandatory Attendance Workshop will be required.
  • Step 3: SART letter will be sent after the 10th unexcused absence. A meeting with the SART will take place and the student will be placed on a SART Contract. Parents will be notified of the time and place for the meeting.
  • Step 4: Referral to Student Attendance Review Board (SARB) for violating the SART Contract if unexcused absences continue after meeting with the school’s SART. Your student will be referred to an alternative educational program or to the appropriate government agency.
